CATHERINE GOODMAN

CATHERINE GOODMAN

New Paintings

In Rosie Boycott’s thoughtful and fascinating catalogue preface Catherine Goodman quotes Lewis Carroll “How do I know what I think, till I see what I say?”  This notion guides Catherine’s new work as she explores her past in intimate paintings of her childhood home interior and various still life objects used as metaphors for family members. Her family’s cosmopolitan and sophisticated background is the foundation for these beautifully measured works; vibrant, colourful paintings though they are there is poignant tenderness here too.

Painting people is important to Catherine Goodman and six portraits, including an incisive self-portrait, will be included in the exhibition. Although finished too late for the catalogue, a beautiful and sensitive painting of Celia Hensman for the Hammersmith Hospital will be shown. There is warmth of feeling and truthfulness in these portraits, which enchants and captivates the viewer. In all, 20 paintings will be shown confirming Catherine Goodman as a painter of rare distinction and integrity.

Catherine Goodman trained at Camberwell and the Royal Academy Schools and won the BP Portrait Award in 2002. She is the Artistic Director of the Prince’s Drawing School.

A fully illustrated catalogue with a text by Rosie Boycott will be published
